Cozumel’s best beaches and activities
The island is known mainly as a snorkeling destination. However, its beautiful beaches are also part of the great must-see of Cozumel. You can enjoy a real white sand paradise, not very developed, which is quite rare for the Riviera Maya. The big challenge will be to choose, but we’ve got your back. Here are some of Cozumel’s best beaches and activities.
Isla de la Pasion
It is a small private island of barely 2km with mangroves, beautiful reefs and long white sand beaches. You can get there by boat (15 min from Cozumel). It is best to arrive early in the morning to enjoy all the facilities.
Cozumel’s best beaches and activities: Chen rio
It is a well kept secret of the locals. It has lush vegetation, pools of warm crystal clear water formed naturally by rocks and a good seafood restaurant.
Playa Palancar
It is one of the most virgin beaches of Cozumel even if there is a beach club. It is quite touristy because of the beauty of its waters and its proximity to the reefs of Palancar.
Playa San Francisco
A popular beach for families. There is a beach club where you can rent kayaks, paddle boards, personal watercraft, snorkeling equipment or enjoy the floating games. As a bonus, the piñas coladas are very good.
Playa Encantada
A quiet beach with golden sand and calm water, it is located near the south of the island close to the lighthouse of Punta Celarain from where you can get a beautiful view of the beach.
San Gervasio
San Gervasio is the main archaeological site in Cozumel. Although the portion open to the public is relatively small, especially compared to Chichen Itza, Tulum or Coba, it has great historical importance. Today you can see several structures that date from the 7th to the 17th century, buildings, plazas and temples.
Cozumel’s best beaches and activities: visit a pearl farm
Here is an off-the-beaten-path activity in Cozumel that few tourists know about. Cozumel Pearl Farm is a family project that was created to study and cultivate in a sustainable way the Pinctada Radiata, an oyster capable of producing pearls.
Over the years, the project has begun to attract curious people and today they offer exclusive tours for up to 8 people. The first step is to go by boat (45min) to the barn, which is located on an islet of white sand between the Caribbean and the Laguna de Bahia Ciega to the north of Cozumel. Once there, the visit begins with the presentation of the project, where you will learn about the cultivation process, research, etc.
