El Cuyo travel guide: How to get here

El Cuyo has managed to protect itself from mass tourism thanks to its geographical location, since you can’t just stumble upon it by chance. The village is located between Cancun and Valladolid, but the route is not direct. That is to say, after leaving Cancun in the direction of Valladolid, you may have to turn left and follow another road for 90 minutes.

The most convenient way to get to El Cuyo is renting a car to save time.

From Cancun or Puerto Morelos, it takes about 2h 30m. From Playa del Carmen, it’s more like 2h 15m.

Go through Popolnáh rather than through Kantunilkín to avoid the multitude of speed bumps. The GPS makes you go through Popolnáh by default, but check carefully.

From Mérida it takes 3 hours and 20 minutes through Tizimin.

You have two options: take Carretera 176 directly to Tizimin, or take Carretera 180 to Valladolid (to visit the city and/or Chichen Itza) and then turn onto Carretera 295 to Tizimin.

How long will it take to visit El Cuyo?

It all depends on your travel pace and interests. Since it is a small village, you can easily visit El Cuyo in one day. But since getting there is still a challenge, it is best to spend 2 or 3 days in El Cuyo so that you don’t drive too far in a short time. The purpose of going to El Cuyo is still to rest.

El Cuyo travel guide: currency

As is often the case in Mexico, very few places in El Cuyo accept credit cards, so it is best that you bring enough cash. Especially, since there are no ATMs or banks in El Cuyo.

When to go to El Cuyo

Of course you can go all year round, but if you kitesurf, the best time to visit El Cuyo is from October to March. From the end of March, the wind dies down and it gets much warmer. It is best to go at the end of January, then the temperature is ideal.
