Puerto Morelos : The Laid-Back Fishing Town of the Riviera Maya

If you are in the Riviera Maya and are looking for a place to relax by the beach, venture into the sea, and spend your time in a beautiful town, the historical fishing village of Puerto Morelos is where you need to be.

This is a place where you’ll find a welcoming community of fishermen. Puerto Morelos is a must-see if you are in the area: it is surrounded by marshes, and, if you go on a boat tour, you will be able to spot many tropical fish, dolphins and turtles. Puerto Morelos is a place that prides itself on its nature conservation efforts and is the home of the second-largest reef in the world.

Where is Puerto Morelos?

This beach is in the state of Quintana Roo. It is 19 miles from Playa del Carmen and 18 miles from Cancún, so if you are in either of these towns, it won’t take you long to get there (only 25 and 35 minutes, respectively).

How is the weather in Puerto Morelos?

The weather here tends to be humid and hot: it can linger between 78°F and 80°F throughout the year. During the summer though, the temperature can reach 89°F; while in the winter it can lower to 55°F.

Activities:

There are many things you can do on this beach. People who love sports can go snorkeling, swimming and windsurfing. You can take a boat ride to the National Marine Park to snorkel or scuba dive.

If you want to stay dry, you can wander around town and visit the artisan shops or eat at different restaurants. In case you are feeling adventurous, there are biking and ATV tours around the area…you can even go zip-lining in the jungle!

Whether you stay on shore or wade into the ocean, Puerto Morelos’ laid-back atmosphere will make you want to return as soon as possible.
