Sian Ka’an: It is time to reconnect with nature
If you’re looking for a day away from crowds, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve can give you just that. This place is characterized by its beautiful virgin beaches, freshwater marshes, jungle and barrier reef. It is inhabited by a variety of animals (both aquatic and terrestrial) that can be seen during a tour. Its name comes from the Mayan language and means “Place where the sky was born.” Sian Ka’an has been a protected area for a long time now due to its unique environment, which is why in 1987 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can get to Sian Ka’an from Akumal, Playa del Carmen and other places nearby the area. Although the best route is leaving from Tulum—which is only 30 minutes away. Many people decide to book a tour which usually includes an excursion of the biosphere: you’ll be able to see the marshes, the beaches and the wildlife that lives in Sian Ka’an. You are sure to see all kinds of birds, fish, dolphins, turtles and even a crocodile or two. Punta Allen is a fishing town 26 miles from the Reserve’s entrance, there you’ll find places to sleep and eat seafood in case you get tired and hungry.
