What to do in El Cuyo
El Cuyo is a small fishing village with miles of sandy beaches. It faces the Gulf of Mexico. It is one of the last small paradises on the Yucatan coast that is still relatively virgin. There is no bar here, there is no beach club. So those who are looking to party quickly go back to the Riviera Maya. They realize that this is not the place for them. Here are some tips on what to do in El Cuyo.
What to do in El Cuyo: Explore the village
El Cuyo is less than 3 km long, so you can walk through the village in 30 minutes. There are several houses covered in street art that brighten up the landscape. Even the police station on the main square has been painted.
Have a drink with a view of the sea
This place is not very developed on the tourist side, so there are no restaurants or bars on the beach. Moreover, here we really respect the Mexican law which establishes that the beaches are public, contrary to other Mexican destinations where some establishments invade the beach little by little, and sometimes even close the access to the public, which is completely illegal.
Cooling off
It can be quite hot in the middle of the day here, so we are happy to find a place to cool down. Especially because there is no bar or restaurant on the beach, and there are not really any shady areas on the beach, except some palapas (straw huts) where you can rest near the pier. Walk to La Playita, a nice little place that sells micheladas and “paletas” (ice creams). They have several flavors.
Enjoy the beaches
There is no doubt that the best thing to do in El Cuyo is to enjoy its miles of beaches. Just take one of the many small paths, or go down the street that leads to the pier, to get to the beach in the center of El Cuyo.
What to do in El Cuyo: Kitesurfing
Another must-see in El Cuyo is kitesurfing. Indeed, it is an excellent destination for kitesurfing in Mexico since it offers good wind conditions more or less all year round. The best time to kitesurf in El Cuyo is from November to August, and it is recommended to wear a neoprene suit (max 2 mm) from November to March. With long and mostly empty beaches, low water level and a sandy bottom, it is also a great place for beginners.
