Celebrate Cozumel’s greatness in El Cedral town

El Cedral town is around 14 miles from the main city. It is around a 30-minute drive away. Upon arrival, you will find a community steeped in history and culture. This town boasts one of the island’s oldest relics, with much of its architecture and evidence of paintings on the walls dating back to 800 AD.

El Cedral town: The Fair is Life

The best time to come here is during the “Feria El Cedral,” which takes place during the last days of April and the beginning of May. It is the region’s most important festival. You’ll find bullfights, cockfights, rodeos, tastings of traditional foods and drinks. Also, folkloric dances, and horseback rides. The Cedral Fair commemorates the day of the Holy Cross. As well as the arrival of the 21 founding families that sought safety in Cozumel during the Caste War in 1848.

El Cedral town: A little history

Casimiro Cárdenas is said to have founded this annual celebration 150 years ago. After an attack during the Caste War, Cardenas was one of a group that fled to the island of Cozumel from the town of Saban. Other of Cárdenas’ comrades were killed by his adversaries, but Cárdenas survived, owing to the fact that he always carried a crucifix with him.

El Cedral town: What can you find

This celebration starts in late April and lasts until May 3rd, the day of the masons and the Holy Cross. Masses, rosaries, and folkloric dances are held on these days.  The Cedral festival includes fairs, traditional food, music, and competitions. It is undoubtedly one of the liveliest festivities that we can find on the island, plus you can find the Mayan traditions in every day of their celebration.

How to get to Cedral

Getting to Cedral is very easy, whether you go on your own or decide to go by cab. This small community is located 14 miles from where the boat terminal for Playa del Carmen is located.
