Insider tips for Puerto Morelos
Arriving at a beach destination without prior information can be dangerous, for your wallet, for your safety, and for your family. That’s why we present you the best insider tips for Puerto Morelos.
To simplify your arrival and the tedious process of gathering interesting info, we share with you here our insider tips for Puerto Morelos.
About Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos was once a small fishing village on the Caribbean coast of the Riviera Maya. But now, Puerto Morelos is an idyllic, quiet & safe place, which is why it is mainly visited by families from Mexico, but partly also by guests from Canada, USA and Europe.
Puerto Morelos is located on the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, between Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Both cities can be reached in about 25-35 minutes by car. Fortunately, the tourism in Puerto Morelos is not comparable to that in Playa del Carmen.
Airport Transportation
It takes about 25 minutes by cab from Cancun airport to Puerto Morelos. However, newcomers are often transported at overpriced prices (as it is unfortunately often the case in every country).
For a ride from the airport to Puerto Morelos you have to calculate with about 35 USD. For a ride from the town Puerto Morelos (the back part of Puerto Morelos) to the beach it is about 2-3 USD. There are also Colectivos, which are buses that will take you to the beach, Playa del Carmen, Cancun and other places for a few pesos.
Insider tips for Puerto Morelos: Cash withdrawal
In Mexico, you can pay with Peso or also with USD. We recommend you to withdraw pesos at the bank and NOT to go to the exchange office. Usually the exchange rate in the exchange office is much worse. In addition, we recommend you to choose Peso when paying with credit card.
Beaches and water
In Puerto Morelos there are normally hardly any waves, so the place is super suitable for families with small children. In addition, Puerto Morelos is ideal for snorkeling trips. For example, you can go snorkeling by boat a few meters out into the sea. Alternatively, you can try your luck directly on the beach. Grab your snorkeling equipment and walk into the sea.
Cenotes near Puerto Morelos
While in high summer temperatures the sea water takes on bathtub temperatures, you can refresh yourself optimally in the cenotes in the middle of the jungle. There is something for everyone.
Boca del Puma
This is ideal for children because they can “fly” into the water on a swing. There were also two monkeys here that were very trusting and kids always enjoy them. The cost is 200-300 mex. pesos, depending on whether you want to look at the second closed cenote as well.
Insider tips for Puerto Morelos: Cenote Siete Bocas
Since there are seven different entrances to the cenotes, the cenote is called Siete (seven) Bocas. The entrances are sometimes more, sometimes less adventurous. This is because there are open and closed cenotes. At the entrance you are given life jackets, but whether you want to wear them is up to you.
While you reach the closed cenotes by a steep staircase, you can jump down into the open cenote. The entrance fee is about 300 Mexican pesos per person.
