Nature activities in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos, between Cancun and Tulum, is an old fishermen town that is gradually gaining attention. Its location in the Riviera Maya gives it the opportunity to visit several special attractions. Here are some nature activities in Puerto Morelos.

Birdwatching in the Toh Reserve

On the road to the cenotes is the Toh Reserve. It is a must-see place in Puerto Morelos for nature lovers. An ecological reserve of 1200 acres. Here we can find an important conservation work. Its mission is to protect the local fauna and flora. In addition to three cenotes, there are many hiking trails. Here you can see 100 species of birds (especially in the early morning) and sometimes tapirs, deer and monkeys.

Nature activities in Puerto Morelos: Follow the Cenotes Route

There is a road of about 35 km dotted with cenotes, from Puerto Morelos towards Leona Vicario, which has been nicknamed the “Ruta de los Cenotes” .

There are several cenotes in Puerto Morelos:

  • Cenote Las Mojarras: This outdoor cenote is the largest cenote in Puerto Morelos. You can do several activities there, but I found it to be poorly maintained.
  • Cenote Boca del Puma: it is a big natural park with open cenotes and other underground ones (stalactites, stalagmites, fossils). There are 7 zip lines, quad biking, rappelling, horseback riding.
  • Cenote Siete Bocas: it has 7 different entrances and a network of underground galleries. With its rock formations, roots and light effects, it is one of the most beautiful cenotes in Puerto Morelos.
  • Cenote Verde Lucero: it is a big open cenote that I like because it is well maintained, the reception is friendly, it is cheaper than the others and there are even monkeys on the spot.
  • Cenote La Noria: a large underground cenote 18 meters deep and 47 meters wide that is home to bats and small fish.
  • Cenote Kin Ha: This is a 50m deep cenote that is part of a network of underground rivers. It is the ideal place to go diving.
  • Cenote Zapote: close to Kin Ha is this beautiful open cenote with a 10m platform from which it is possible to jump into the water. It is also called Hells Bells because of a strange bell-shaped rock formation that can be seen while diving.

Nature activities in Puerto Morelos: Selvatica Adventure Park

Selvatica is a must-see in Puerto Morelos, especially for adrenaline seekers. It was recognized as the best adventure park in Latin America at the World Travel Awards and named one of the 35 best adventures in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. It is an adventure park that allows you to fly over the jungle through a circuit of 12 zip lines, which follow international safety standards. There is also a hidden cenote that can be accessed by quad bike, and Tarzania, a mix between roller coaster and zip line. The great advantage here is that since access is limited and the tours are done in small guided groups, there is no waiting.
