Playa del Carmen with little spending

In the whole Riviera Maya, and mainly in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, it is easy to blow the budget because prices are often higher than elsewhere in Mexico. But it is possible to have a cheap stay in Playa del Carmen when you know the good deals. Here are some tips on how to enjoy Playa del Carmen with little spending.

Marvel at the voladores

In addition to being the main square of Playa del Carmen that hosts the famous Portal Maya statue and free games for children, the Fundadores Park gathers several cultural events. Among them, we can see the free show of the voladores de Papantla declared Intangible Heritage of UNESCO. More than a dance, it is a pre-Hispanic ritual ceremony in which participants climb a 30-meter pole.

The ritual begins with the voladores climbing the pole, which can reach impressive heights of up to 30 meters. Once at the top, they tie ropes around their waists and launch themselves into the air, slowly descending in a spiral motion while attached to the ropes. As they gracefully descend, the voladores mimic the flight of birds, symbolizing the connection between the earthly and spiritual realms. The ritual is accompanied by the enchanting sounds of traditional music and the beat of drums, creating a mystical atmosphere. The Voladores de Papantla ritual is not only a mesmerizing spectacle to witness but also a powerful symbol of cultural preservation and spiritual reverence.

Playa del Carmen with little spending: Attend the fire dance

Also at Fundadores Park, you can attend the free Aztec fire dance show.  Many people think that this is a Mayan dance because it is in Mayan territory, but it is not! In a completely different genre than the “voladores”, this is a really impressive show to see in Playa del Carmen, especially when it is already dark.

Walking on Quinta Avenida

The 5th Avenue is the biggest must-see in Playa del Carmen. You’ll inevitably end up stumbling upon it as you walk along, as it stretches for 22 blocks! It is the main street, very dynamic, lined with restaurants, bars, cafes, stores of all kinds.  It’s also a nice free walk because in addition to being pedestrian, there is a lot of animation (mariachis, impersonators, human statues, etc.). There are also several good photo spots on Quinta Avenida, for example:

  • A bench with a bronze sculpture of a Mexican revolutionary (two locations: at the corner of 14th and the other at 38th)
  • A large Olmec head (corner of 5th and Constituyentes)
  • A bench with a catrina and the inscription “waiting for the right man” (between Avenida Juarez and Calle 1 Sur)

Tasting tequila

Tequila is deeply intertwined with the country’s cultural heritage. This beloved alcoholic beverage is derived from the agave plant, specifically the blue agave variety. It comes mainly from the state of Jalisco, a little far from Playa del Carmen. The production of tequila dates back centuries, with the ancient civilizations of Mexico recognizing the agave plant’s versatility.

The process begins by harvesting the agave, followed by cooking and fermenting its core, known as the piña. Once fermented, the liquid is distilled and aged in oak barrels to develop its unique flavors and aromas. Tequila has become a symbol of Mexican identity and is enjoyed worldwide for its smoothness and character. It is often savored neat, in cocktails, or as the key ingredient in the famous margarita.

In Playa del Carmen, Hacienda Tequila is a store that hosts a sort of small museum about the process of making the national alcohol of Mexico. If you’re nice and interested in the product, they’ll let you taste some free tequila.

Playa del Carmen with little spending: enjoy the free beaches

In theory, the beach in Playa del Carmen is public and free.  In practice, the numerous hotels and beach clubs sometimes leave little room for those who just want to sit with their towel. Here are the beaches that you can enjoy for free:

  • Fundadores Park beach: very lively, easy access, soccer and volleyball fields
  • Mamitas Beach: the most famous beach in Playa del Carmen
  • Playacar beach: beautiful and very quiet because it is in a residential area
  • Punta Esmeralda: beautiful natural beach, to see during the week when it is quiet

Bring your own food and drinks, towels and umbrellas, and you will save a lot of money.
