The new Tulum airport
The new Tulum airport will help ease all the air traffic the Cancun airport currently has. The airport is 47 miles from Playa del Carmen, providing the nearest access point to the enchanting town of Valladolid. Also, the Chichén Itzá archaeological site in Yucatán. Additionally, it will enhance connectivity to the southern regions of the Riviera Maya.
The new Tulum airport: What to expect
The new airport, with a total investment of approximately 178 million dollars, will be constructed on a 741-square-mile site situated 12.43 miles southwest of downtown Tulum, in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. The primary access road for the airport, spanning 6.52 miles, will link the facility to Federal Highway 307, serving as a commercial and service gateway.
Big numbers
Formally known as the Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, this endeavor aims to transform travel dynamics in the area.
The inaugural stage of the airport will accommodate around 5.5 million passengers annually and support up to 32,000 air operations per year.
The facilities will encompass 13 gates for both domestic and international commercial aircraft, along with a general and executive aviation apron equipped with 28 positions. Furthermore, there will be a dedicated hangar housing 12 extra positions for business jets.
The new Tulum airport: By air, but also by land
A pivotal aspect to consider regarding the establishment of the new Tulum Airport is its strategic alignment with the Mayan Train Project, slated for completion by December 2023.
As illustrated on the official map below, the Mayan Train will traverse through Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Campeche, Chiapas, and Tabasco, seamlessly connecting prominent tourist hubs like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, and Palenque.
The synergy between the Tulum Airport and the Tren Maya presents a promising outlook for regional tourism. Travelers will have the convenience of flying directly to Tulum to savor its distinctive attractions before embarking on the Tren Maya to explore other captivating destinations across the Yucatan Peninsula.
