The Town of Motul: a place of splendor, history, and eggs
The town of Motul is ne of those charming small villages where you can fall in love with its history, undiscovered natural wonders, and incredible cuisine is Motul, Yucatan. The priest who formed this community went by the name Motul, which is a Maya word that translates to “Mut bird,” a pheasant or thrush. Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a Mayan hero, was born here. His name made this area known as Motul de Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
Town of Motul: What to do
Once in the town of Motul, go to the “20 de Noviembre” Market. It is right adjacent to the Municipal Palace and is home to a number of eateries, bakeries, and cafes. There are also stalls selling handicrafts and the usual market fare like fresh produce and food of all types. Visit the Church of San Juan Bautista, a revered religious site in front of the Motul market. It is from 17th century, and its original façade is still present. Visit the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Museum, which is now a repository for literature, images, and personal items. Admission is free.
Town of Motul: Try the eggs
Try the motuleños eggs: You must not miss this, without a doubt: a fried tortilla topped with black beans, a sunny-side-up egg, red sauce, peas, and golden fried plantains. There are various vendors in the local market where you may find this awesome treat. They are often offered in orders of two, but you can customize your order anyway you wish. A delicacy from the Town of Motul to the entire world.
Come in January
Every year, the town of Motul holds two traditional festivals in honor of San Juan Bosco on January 31 and the Virgen del Carmen on July 16. During these celebrations, a variety of events are held, including bullfights in an outdoor arena, folk dances, popular dances, mechanical rides, and fireworks.
How to get there
The bus ride from Mérida to the town of Motul takes about 45 minutes. The route is run by Autobuses Centro de Mérida and Autobuses Noreste Yucatán. Check the schedules before the weekend and major holidays.
