Crococun, so much more than a petting zoo

Sure, a petting zoo doesn’t sound like a very thrilling adventure—unless you’re petting crocodiles. In Crococun park, located right between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, other than interacting with the animals, you can learn about them, as well. And there’s more than crocodiles. Crococun is home to critters of all shapes and sizes.

Crococun is a different kind of petting zoo

All right, calling this place a petting zoo might be a little unfair. Crococun is not a zoo, but more of a reserve, and it certainly offers a fuller experience than your run-of-the-mill animal hug-fest. Other than the opportunity to hold a few animals you never thought you would, here you’ll also learn the different ways in which they interact with the ecosystem and how they keep nature’s delicate balance.

The animals at Crococun

With a name like Crococun, you can expect crocodiles, and, as it is a reserve, they roam mostly free. Listen to your guide, as you don’t want to step on one—they’ll turn you into shoes.

However, this is the home to a wide variety of animals. There are birds—led by the ever-talking parrots—, turtles, and rescued white-tailed deer. You’ll also see those ancient and historically important hairless dogs with the unpronounceable name, the Xoloitzcuintli.

Oh, and spider monkeys! Take our word for it: buy some bananas at the entrance. You’ll see them lower a basket from the treetops for you to place it inside. Then, they’ll lower it again, asking for more, as you essentially become their waiter.

The tour

The whole tour can take you anywhere, from an hour to an hour and a half. The guides make it an unforgettable experience, as they are very good at what they do. Yes, they offer great explanations and insights on each animal you encounter, but they’re also very experienced animal handlers, and they encourage you to join in the interactive experience.

There’s a snack bar and café at the end of the tour, as well as a gift shop. No crocodile shoes, though.
