Punta Venado Bike Park – Jungle Pedalin’
If I said we should go do some mountain biking in the Riviera Maya you’d call me crazy to my face—and with good reason. If you’ve ever seen it from up high, the jungle here is completely flat, not a hill on sight. But look and you shall find. If you’ve had your fill of cenotes, ziplines, and snorkeling, Punta Venado Bike Park has the variety you seek.
Where is Punta Venado Bike Park?
Sounds incredible, but Punta Venado is not far. It’s tucked away in the jungle, just 9 miles west from Playa del Carmen. The jungle around it guarantees a pretty full mountain biking experience, but that means it’s not right beside the road. It’s actually at the end of a dirt road, a couple of miles long.
The activities at Punta Venado Bike Park are simple: just bike
They’ll provide everything you need here, including, of course, a bicycle. They have a wide selection of different kinds, as well as helmets and other protective equipment. At the registration desk, they’ll explain how the different trails work and give you a map. The rest—which trail to take, how many circuits to complete, and how to complete them—is up to you.
The trails at the park
There are three different types of trails: the easiest, green; intermediate, blue; the hardest, black. These are not scenic routes, either. You’ll come across different obstacles to overcome, like ramps, mud, and narrow paths. Don’t worry about sticking to one single trail, though, they swerve and turn and meet each other. So, if you think a green trail is too easy, take a blue one at the next intersection. Or, if you bit more than you can chew, switch to an easier one along the way, no shame.
Don’t rely entirely on your map, either. There are signs and signposts along the routes to guide you and make sure you don’t get lost in the thick jungle. There’s plenty to discover in it, though, so get on the bike and start pedalin’.
