Itzá is the name of a lineage of Chontal origin. The Chontal people settled at this site. By extension, the inhabitants of other settlements had a name for it. They referred to the inhabitants of this ancient Maya city as “Itzáes”. This is the origin of its name: Edzná: “House of the Itzáes”.
What to expect
As in other sites of the Maya world, the first buildings of Edzná were covered with large blocks of limestone. They were regularly cut, covered with thick stucco and painted bright red.
