Hacienda Dzibikak near Merida: A little history
During the henequen boom, Dzibikak, like many Umán haciendas, thrived as it employed locals in agave cultivation and processing. With the advent of synthetic fibers, henequen’s appeal waned, leading to the hacienda’s abandonment. Nearby streets feature numerous derelict houses, some demolished or uninhabitable, and an old chapel once used for Holy Cross celebrations.
A star is reborn
Back in 2003, an English couple visited Yucatan to celebrate New Year’s Eve, opting for a stay in a fancy Yucatan hacienda. The charm of the architecture, the serene mornings filled with birdsong, and their close connection with nature left an indelible mark. They were so enamored that they decided to purchase one, not with the intention of running it as a business, but rather to restore and bring it back to life. Their quest led them to discover Hacienda Dzibikak in 2004. Over the next three years, they managed the project from London, working with a team of approximately 80 individuals. Finally, in 2011, the extensive remodeling was successfully completed.
The wedding calling
In 2011, just as Hacienda Dzibikak was nearing its grand reopening, fate intervened when a couple passing by happened to stop and inquire about hosting their wedding at the hacienda. This serendipitous encounter marked the formal beginning of hosting events at the property. Each year, an impressive tally of around 35 weddings takes place here, complemented by rentals for family gatherings, photoshoots, concerts, and various other events. Notably, these activities also contribute positively to the local economy and support the families residing in Dzibikak.
The amenities
The hacienda features two beautiful gardens with air-conditioned rooms and restrooms for hosts. There’s also The Blue Room for up to 250 guests with various amenities, a garden terrace, private parking, and spacious restrooms for guests with maid service.
