Tamalcab Island: wildlife awaits

Tamalcab Island is a little almost uninhabited island with white sands and quiet waters. The exotic tropical vegetation, is a variety of low flood forest and patches of Medium jungle. As such, it is something that attracts the attention of international tourists and national visitors. Having this vegetation in an excellent state of conservation and colors, makes it an ideal place to rest. It is in front of the town of Calderitas, a town known for its gastronomic variety.

This island near the Belizean border offers you a one-of-a-kind experience in which nature is the primary ingredient that envelops all of your senses. When you step off the boat, the island beckons you to walk on its clean, clear sands and cool down in its tranquil, transparent waters.

Animals everywhere

This small island is covered in tropical flora, including a low flooded jungle and some parts of medium-sized jungle, making it an ideal spot for rest, relaxing, and reconnecting with nature. Tamalcab Island has also an unusual fauna, with spider monkeys, tepezcuintles, badgers, ospreys, coatis, and agoutis, among other species, but there are also Mayan ruins.

What to do

Tamalcab Island is great for swimming and water activities such as sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, and pedal boat trips because it is a shallow spot. You can also admire beautiful sunsets from this vantage point. It has white sands and calm waters ideal for water sports such as sailing or for a ride in a kayak or pedal boat. It has a restaurant area where you can taste dishes such as breaded shrimp, dogfish empanadas or butter crabs.

A fun day trip

From Calderitas you can travel to the virgin island of Tamalcab, Venado Key and Dos Hermanos Key.  If you are in Chetumal, and you want to save money, take the public transportation that leaves behind the Museum of Mayan Culture, it will cost you only 5 pesos, and you will arrive in 30 minutes.

Some tips

It is important that you carry enough drinks to keep you hydrated during the trip, since it lasts from five to seven hours, depending on your preference. If you like fish, it is not necessary to bring food, since whatever is caught during the trip will be cooked at the end of the trip, or at Venado Key. The excursion usually departs between 8:00 and 10:00 am. But there are tours to contemplate the sunrise, sunset and full moon.
