Calcehtok Cave

The Calcehtok Caves, also known as X-Pukil, are 5 kilometers long. Here you can go hiking and caving, through impressive stalactites and stalagmites, with vaults up to 30 meters high.

The Calcehtok Caves are made up of a system of tunnels that will be part of your ecotourism adventure. Here you will pass through narrow passages, mud and dark areas. You can also climb with ropes, and admire the Mayan archaeological treasures found here, such as pottery and weapons.

Its name means in Maya: deer neck stone (cal, neck; ceh, deer; tok, stone or flint) and was attributed by the locals due to a stone carved with the representation of a deer’s neck, which was found in the place.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • The paths change in degree of difficulty depending on the option chosen.
  • The guides are experts who know the caves. Without them you can not enter, because it is very easy to get disoriented and get lost inside.
  • The cost of the tour includes a head flashlight. It will allow you to have your hands free.
  • We strongly recommend you to wear denim clothes and non-skid shoes, not sandals or barefoot. The caves are quite slippery.
  • The clothes you decide to wear should take into account that it is very likely that they will end up completely torn and dirty. You can also bring water to avoid the dehydration.
  • It is a tour not suitable for people with fear of narrow, dark or closed places and much less afraid of bats. There is no other dangerous fauna inside the place, so it is quite safe.
