Kohunlich near Chetumal
Kohunlich near Chetumal is an archaeological zone and Mayan ceremonial center. It sits 40 miles from the capital Chetumal. It began its construction between 500 and 600 A.D. It was a commercial link between the Yucatan Peninsula and the Mayan cities of Central America.
We do not know its original name. Kohunlich comes from the English cohoon ridge (corozos). They are a kind of palm tree characteristic of the Petén area. The settlement is made up of housing, civic and ceremonial complexes, all located in an area of 5.4 square miles.
Kohunlich near Chetumal: What to expect
Kohunlich is the most extensively studied site in Quintana Roo. It also has the largest number of areas open to view. This site is of great interest for its architectural ensembles. Indeed, it allows to know aspects of the daily and ceremonial life of the ancient inhabitants of this site.
This place consists of a series of architectural complexes of ceremonial character. One example is as a residence. Some of them could function as neighborhoods or high-level family groupings.
Best way to tour
Currently you can start the tour in the residential complex. Here you can admire an interesting set of residential buildings. Admire the sidewalks, niches and various elements associated with everyday life.
You will find the Temple of the Masks, which was for people of high rank. Among other buildings, you will see the square of the Stelae (the palace of the Stelae, the Graderia and the King). This is an area that was possibly for public or administrative activities. Finally, you can find the acropolis, which is part of the high-level residential buildings.
Some must-visit structures
- Temple of the Masks – This is an Early Classic Pyramid built in 500 AD with a central staircase decorated by large stucco masks. Indeed, the pyramid is one of the oldest structures in Kohunlich. With a height of 8 ft/2.5 m the masks are in good condition. Originally there were 8 masks. Sadly there are only 5 remaining.
- 27 Steps – A structure and area located the furthest from the entrance, the 27 steps is a large platform thought to hold residential buildings for the elite. The view from the top of the platform is terrific and provides an overview of the jungle to the south.
- Residential buildings – The beds are still intact, only the foundations of the buildings preserved, but the area is quite amazing.

It is in the southern part of Quintana Roo, 70 km from Chetumal.
Access
From the city of Chetumal take Federal Highway 186 Chetumal-Escárcega, towards Escárcega. Passing the town of Francisco Villa, 9 km ahead take the detour to the site.
