Kaan Lagoon: Step onto Another Planet
Kaan Lagoon has an unusual fee: they’ll charge you extra if you want to fly a drone and take pictures. Once you see a top-view picture of this place you’ll see why. With its crater-like cenote just under the surface, this is one of those places that make you feel like you are on an entirely different planet.
Where is Kaan Luum Lagoon?
Fortunately for those staying in the Riviera Maya, this paradise is only a few miles from Tulum, and it’s easy to get to. The small public shuttles make stops there; taxi drivers know the place by name and can drop you off right at the entrance. If you’re driving, it’s easy to find on a map, either electronic or on old-fashioned paper.
You really have no excuse to miss it.
The astonishing colors of Kaan Luum Lagoon
In Mayan, the name of this place means “yellow land”. One wonders if it’s because of the sand. As most of the Kaan Luum Lagoon’s shore is shallow, the sand under the surface gives it a slightly yellow tinge.
Whichever the case, there’s no denying the colors here are unbelievable. When you exit the jungle, its deep green shade recedes and the previously mentioned yellowish-white and the clear turquoise of the water fill your view. Further out, you’ll discover another color—deep blue. That’s because you’ve arrived at the cenote which lays right under the surface.
In the waters of the Kaan Luum Lagoon
The lagoon’s crystal-clear waters are usually at shoulder height, perfect for pretty much everyone. Once you reach the cenote, however, the depth suddenly plunges to a whopping 270 feet. As you can imagine, divers love the Kaan Luum cenote, and there are many groups and excursions that like to swim over the edge and see what they discover at its bottom.
Most visitors are content just swimming around in the shallow waters, but you can rent a kayak, too, if you want to glide across the surface.
Facilities at Kaan Luum Lagoon
There really are none—it’s all up to you. There’s a picnic area, but you’ll have to bring your own food. Another thing to keep in mind: there’s absolutely no shade over the lagoon, which is where you’ll spend most of your time—bring a hat!
