Within Uxuxubi, a small church dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe stands. It is adorned with its own altar and a traditional palapa. The community also boasts a modest school that caters to around 11 students. Every member of this close-knit community resides within the heart of the jungle. They lead lives intricately tied to their surroundings. Parents engage in diverse occupations such as cultivating pitahayas, or harvesting honey. Even participating in park-related endeavors, or contributing through various communal activities.

The lush surroundings are teeming with a diverse range of wildlife, providing opportunities for sightings of various animal species including vibrant birds, playful spider monkeys, intriguing insects, reptiles, and even elusive small cats like the ocelot. The community’s connection to the land is evident through the cultivation of regionally specific fruits and vegetables such as pitahaya, along with the unique practice of honey production by the melipona bee.

For those seeking an immersive outdoor experience, camping is permitted in the scenic environs of Uxuxubi. To beat the heat, a refreshing dip awaits in a small cenote, adding to the allure of the place. Guided tours around the lagoon provide an up-close encounter with the majestic Moreleti crocodile, and an exciting project is currently in the works, allowing visitors to swim with these captivating creatures.

The adventures don’t stop there; Uxuxubi offers a range of activities for the more adventurous souls. Embark on invigorating hikes to explore the lush surroundings, and experience an adrenaline rush as you leap from the zip line, adding a touch of exhilaration to your visit. The tour lasts approximately two and a half hours.

Uxuxubi Lagoon near Akumal: How to get there

To get to this destination you must take Federal Highway 180 that takes you to Cancun and go directly to Akumal. Once there, you will have to go into the jungle up to where the town ends and you will find a dirt road; after 11 kilometers you will come across Uxuxubi.

You can go by car or public transportation; you also have the option to leave your car in Akumal and take a motorcycle cab to take you all the way. The trip takes four and a half hours in total.
