A walk around Oxkutzcab

On the way there are many orange groves and other citrus orchards. And then you can read the sign “Welcome to the orchard of Yucatan”.  There is a lot of movement in the market. Rumour has it: this is the largest in the state. It has its touches that make it different from other markets in Mexico, one of them, hearing the Mayan language as a common mode of communication. Here are some impressions from a walk around Oxkutzcab.

What to expect

There is a former Franciscan convent, currently in use by a religious order of nuns. Next door is a temple of the usual dimensions that were used throughout the second half of the sixteenth century, is a single nave, barrel vault in which we clearly see the logs that were interspersed to build it, they were even painted reddish to make them even more noticeable.

The main square is large. However, here, unlike in other squares, there are no empty spaces. It is a well wooded garden. The building of the municipal presidency preserves that style so characteristic of the Porfiriato, with arches, very high ceilings and, in this case, the central decoration is formed by an element of the so-called “neo-Maya” architecture.

A walk around Oxkutzcab: What to do

Walking around here is a real pleasure, there is no rush, no crowds. Buildings are appearing to tell us of a better time, with their own style and very characteristic of the Yucatan peninsula. We are in an area of warm weather most of the year, with constant humidity, it is not surprising that the facades show the consequences of humidity.

It is here where the Puuc zone begins, that is, the region where the flat peninsula begins to show hills. The Loltún caves are located a short distance away.
