Hunucma in Yucatan

Hunucma in Yucatan, a picturesque town on the road to Sisal, welcomes you with architecture and natural surprises. It will give you a peaceful and memorable travel experience.

Hunucmá is a word of Mayan origin that in Spanish means “only answered”. Located just 40 minutes from Mérida, it is a town worth visiting if you are looking to learn about the actual Maya culture. It has access to one of the most beautiful ports on the Yucatecan coast, Sisal. It also has ecotourism and archaeo-astronomy options.

Hunucma in Yucatan: A little history

As in most towns in Yucatan, the main park has a kiosk, green areas and “you and me” style chairs. On one side, the main church and former convent dedicated to Francis of Assisi stands out in contrasting yellow. Built in the XVI century, its atrium is a meeting place for the locals. On the same street are the bus and van stops for public transportation from Mérida to Hunucmá ($18 pesos) and from Hunucmá to Sisal ($16 pesos).

What to do

The port and the haciendas are located around the municipal capital. In addition, there are several archaeological settlements, among them “Kaxec”. It is 16 miles west of the municipality. And it shows vestiges of a late classic hamlet and evidence of having been inhabited since colonial times. It is also worth taking into account the hamlet of San Francisco de Paula, located 3 miles south of Sisa, and which was a refuge in colonial times for runaway black slaves. This community was inhabited until approximately 1920.

Handicrafts like no other

The main handicraft activities in the municipality are the making of typical clothing, the elaboration of henequen fiber shoes and the carving of coconuts. Also outstanding are the works of jewelry and saddlery. Visit the entrance to the “Eulogio Rosado” handicrafts market. With a yellow façade and red interior, its two-colored mosaic floor transports you back in time.  A few blocks ahead you can visit the colorful municipal market “Our Lady of Guadalupe” that has been extended with stalls in the streets, where you can find food, vegetables, and more.

Natural attractions

Sisal Beach is a beautiful port located on the north-west coast of the State of Yucatan in the municipality of Hunucmá. Few people know it, but long ago it was called Santa María de Sisal.

Sisal has many tourist attractions, where taking a picture to keep a beautiful memory is worth it. It has many viewpoints which are strategically located to observe a large number of migratory birds that arrive each year, among which  the “Canadian Duck” is very common.
