San Antonio Yaxché: an Hacienda worth visiting

Nearby the town of the same name, the Ex-Hacienda de San Antonio Yaxché is a cultural precinct that dates from the 19th century. The Mayans built it with stones, wood, iron and dirt. It has two entrances and two wells, still in operation.

San Antonio Yaxché: What to expect

About a mile from Ucú, its municipal seat, is Yaxché de Peón. This is a place that preserves vestiges of the hacienda that operated until about 40 years ago. Here, the henequen fiber industry blossomed, just as in the neighboring ejidos of Noc Ac and Ucú.

Only the good memories of those times remain. Whereas in the streets there are some machines that were used for this activity. For example, a brush with thick spikes to comb the fiber and a sosquil braiding machine.

A little stroll

This hacienda, which is now in ruins, had houses of monumental architecture, in which paranormal phenomena often “happen”. To date, the population, of less than a thousand people, continues to celebrate its patron saint with great devotion in June. Its beautiful church is dedicated to him. The church still has simple arches on its façade. And on the side a large arch features different figures and a cross at the top. Walk through this precinct and awe at its colossal structure. It a symbol of the boom that this paradisiacal region of the state once had.

Abandoned treasures

Some of the premises that were used as offices, pay office and others occupied by the staff have been abandoned and the branches have taken over the walls, offering a spectacular location for lovers of video and photography.

Continuing along the cobblestone road you reach the side of the big house, which preserves simple arches that form part of its façade. On the left side of the big house there is still a large arch decorated with different figures, topped at the end with a cross.
