Some tourist secrets in Bacalar

The Bacalar lagoon is a destination full of little treasures. Before big tourism comes, it’s best we seize its colors, beauty and people. Some tourist secrets in Bacalar include sailing, drinking and hanging out with the locals.

Isla de los Pajaros

This is the best place to watch birds in Bacalar. In fact, at least 15 species settle here during the nesting season or simply as a stopover on their migratory path. As the island is protected, it is only possible to observe them from a boat (on a day or half-day tour of the lagoon).

Some tourist secrets in Bacalar: Sailing

Taking a sailboat tour is one of the best activities to do in Bacalar. It is an eco-responsible way to discover the lagoon, its fauna and flora, while taking your time. Moreover, it allows you to jump into the turquoise water, wherever you want. The weather and the wind are very favorable for this kind of outing all year long.

See a movie about the lagoon with a beer

Cerveza Bacalar is a club and resto-bar in front of the lagoon where you can taste the local craft beer of Bacalar. Not a beer fan? No problem! The restaurant offers several other options with good cocktails, several dishes and snacks. There are deck chairs and hammocks with a nice atmosphere during the day, but you can go there at night to watch their film projections on the lagoon.

Watching the sunrise on a cenote

For early risers, the sunrise is a must see in Bacalar. It is a magical moment because at this time of the day there is almost no one around and you feel truly privileged. The stand up paddle tour takes you to the Pirates Channel and then to the Cenote Negro, before finishing with a breakfast on the way back.

Uchben Kah Ecotourism Park

This park of 290 hectares is a happiness for sports people. Between jungle and lagoon, you will be able to make hikes, bike rides, snorkeling, and of course swimming. The fauna and flora are very well preserved, as no motorized vehicles are allowed. Take the guided kayak tour following a small river that takes you to the lagoon. It is even possible to kayak at night with a headlamp to observe the crocodiles, in complete safety of course.

Some tourist secrets in Bacalar: Rent a bike

Bicycles are the ideal way to get around Bacalar and to visit the different cenotes of Bacalar, the rapids or Fort San Felipe for example. There is a small bicycle path between Highway 307 and the streets of the center. The Avenida Costera, which runs along the lagoon, is also a good place to bike. In general, the streets are in good condition and the traffic is not heavy. Remember to bring enough water because it can be very hot.
