Isla Mujeres insider tips
Isla Mujeres is about 13 kilometers off Cancún and extends over a length of about 3 miles and a width of half a mile. On Isla Mujeres live, depending on the source, more than 20,000 inhabitants nowadays, who draw their income mainly from tourism and fishing. Here are some Isla Mujeres insider tips.
The name “Isla Mujeres” comes from the Spanish conquerors and means “island of the women”. In the year 550 B.C. the Mayan built a sanctuary for the fertility and moon goddess Ix Chel. Since then, it has always been a place of pilgrimage for them.
By cab from Cancún airport to Isla Mujeres
Cab is, of course, the fastest, but also the most expensive option to get from the airport to one of the ferry docks and to Isla Mujeres. Since Uber is banned in Cancún, the official cabs at the airport are your best bet.
However, if you’re not in a super hurry to get to the island, take the ADO bus to the Cancún center bus stop and take a cab from there. This will save you a lot of money. Here you can check the times and prices and buy a ticket directly.
Isla Mujeres insider tips: Snorkeling with whale sharks
In many places in Mexico you have the opportunity to experience a unique encounter with the biggest sea creature in the world. This is also the case on Isla Mujeres. Between June and September the whale sharks pass by Isla Mujeres to enjoy the plankton-rich waters.
Numerous providers offer the tours, so you have a good choice. Research the tour providers on the internet beforehand and choose one that treats the whale sharks respectfully, i.e. only a few people are allowed in the water at a time and the welfare of the animals is paramount.
Beaches on Isla Mujeres: Playa Norte and Playa Central
As the name might suggest, Playa Norte is located in the north of the island. This is the most popular beach on Isla Mujeres, where most tourists hang out. There are some shady spots under palm trees, beach restaurants and even canopy beds for rent. But be prepared for a high noise level, because from noon on Playa Norte is celebrated extensively with loud music and cool beers.
Playa Central is a bit more relaxed. If you get up early enough in the morning, you practically have the whole beach to yourself.
