Tips for a trip to Cozumel
The island of Cozumel is undoubtedly a small paradise. You will find almost everything on the island that you would want for a good time. With a scooter or a bike, a nice accommodation where you feel comfortable, as well as the desire to discover a bit more of the island, you’ll have the time of your life. Here are some tips for a trip to Cozumel.
Getting to Cozumel Island
The ferries of Winjet and Ultramar sail every hour from the mainland to the island. Be sure to check which of the two operators is running on the day you want to go. In heavy seas, it may also sway a little. Sit on the lowest deck. There it sways the least.
Cozumel also has an international airport with daily flights from Cancún and the USA. There are also almost daily flights from inland Mexico to Cozumel.
Watch and even help out the turtles
On the central east coast of Cozumel, sea turtles lay their eggs. From there, the little turtles hatch by the end of October and make their way into the water. On the island, therefore, nightly turtle rescue actions take place again and again during this time, which are accompanied by biologists. If you drive along the coastal road, you will notice the recorded numbers on the side of the road. These are the identifiers that the volunteers have given to each nest. In addition, the nests are marked with sticks in the sand to which red tape has been attached.
Tips for a trip to Cozumel: there is only one town on Cozumel
There is only one major city on Cozumel: San Miguel de Cozumel. This town of just over 77,000 people is where all the island life happens. Here you will find restaurants, bars, shopping and more. Unfortunately, the town is full of tourists, at least during the day when all the cruise tours dock. In any case, you will immediately notice when the ships have left in the evening. Then the authentic island life without tourists begins.
Where are the most beautiful beaches?
In town, all the beaches are paid for because they belong to either a hotel or a bar. And it is not worthwhile to visit them, because they are not particularly beautiful. You’ll find them on the East coast and the Southern tip of Mexico’s third largest island. And the beaches that await you there are really super beautiful! Long, white and at least during our stay in January super-empty. We had the whole beach to ourselves. But of course it also depends on which beach you settle on. If there is a beach bar or restaurant, the probability of being alone is rather low.
