Puerto Morelos has kept its traditional fishing village atmosphere. Its heart is the Javier Rojo Gomez Plaza, on the main street of the same name. It showcases a church, stores, restaurants, cafes, and the Hunab-Ku handicraft market. From the market, it is a short walk to the beach and the lighthouse. It has become the emblem of the city. It has an inclination because of the many hurricanes it has faced, but it still stands.
When in Puerto Morelos, do this: Diving in the reef of Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos is located near the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world, which runs along the Yucatan Peninsula. The Puerto Morelos reef has become a national park and boasts one of the most beautiful and best-preserved reefs in the Riviera Maya. The area between the beach and the barrier is covered with sea grass which is the best place to see sea turtles, although they are shyer than in Akumal. On the other hand, the bottom of the reef is rich in corals, including some beautiful purple gorgonians and elk horns.
The wreck C-56 Juan Escutia
Besides the coral reef, another place to go diving here is the ship Juan Escutia.
There are many stories of pirates and ships that would have sunk with their treasure, but this one ended up at the bottom of the water for a more noble cause. In 2000, this old warship was deliberately sunk 2km off the coast to become an artificial reef. Over the years, a rich ecosystem has developed there (rays, corals, barracudas, morays, etc.) and it has become a must-see place in Puerto Morelos, 30 meters underwater. It is easy to access and you can explore some parts of the boat such as the engine room, which really makes the experience unique.
