Xaman Ha Aviary : A beautiful escape

One of the main attractions of the Riviera Maya, and southeast Mexico in general, must be the rich and colorful wildlife. Though you’re bound to stumble upon it at times (sometimes when you don’t want to or expect it), it can be quite elusive, too. Birds are probably the most difficult to see up close, as they usually are perched up high on branches or take flight as soon as you look at them. In the Xaman Ha Aviary, there’s a better opportunity to see them in their natural habitat.

Where is the Xaman Ha Aviary?

Playacar is an enclosed community south of Playa del Carmen that houses a couple of tourist attractions, such as an archeological site and the Xaman Ha Aviary. They’re open to the public, though. All you have to do is walk up to the gate and tell the guards where you’re going.

A peaceful stroll around the aviary

Have you ever wondered what this place would look like if humans had never set foot on it? The Xaman Ha Aviary can give you a pretty good idea. As the silence is only broken by the song of flamingos, macaws, parrots, ducks, and other birds, it does seem like you’ve traveled back to a time before people roamed the Earth.

And birds aren’t the only ones living here. Other species, like iguanas and sereques, small, tailless rodents endemic to this part of the world, cross your path as you walk along.

The trees and plants shade the concrete paths that guide you around the place as you continuously spot all kinds of different birds in the trees or gathered around in the feeding pools.

Combine your visit to the Xaman Ha Aviary with other activities

Your visit to Xaman Ha Aviary probably won’t last more than an hour. And, because of its location, it is easy to combine it with other activities. You still have the rest of Playa del Carmen to enjoy.

The park is open from 9am to 5pm every day of the year.
