The Xoximilco Experience

Mexico’s customs and traditions change as you move around the country, which is a problem if you want to experience them all—Mexico is a pretty big country. Xoximilco, however, makes it possible to experience Mexico City’s famous trajineras without having to travel to the Mexican capital.

What’s Xoximilco all about?

In short—as you can probably imagine from the name, a play on Mexico City’s Xochimilco—Xoximilco is a reproduction of Mexico City’s famous trajineras. It doesn’t stop there, however. Many other Mexican traditions converge here to deliver a complete experience in a 3-hour tour.

The reception at Xoximilco is a Quermes

And what’s a quermes (pronounced ker-mes)? A town fair. Xoximilco’s version ditches the games and rides in favor of the food and traditional dances. Try the esquites: corn in a cup to which you can add as much lemon, mayo, cheese, and chili powder as you like. Take part in a traditional quermes dance around the “Torito”: a dancer carrying a paper mache bull on his shoulders. The real deal is burned down with live fireworks. Here, for safety’s sake, the fireworks have been exchanged for colorful LEDs.

Hop aboard one of a trajinera

If you’ve never been to a trajinera, or don’t know what it is, imagine a long barge with a long table in the middle. Xoximilco’s seats 20 people. Each barge has a host with the sole task of keeping the party going. Once you set off, other trajineras will approach occasionally carrying different kinds of entertainment: a dinner of traditional Mexican dishes, different styles of live music from all around Mexico (mariachi included), and more drinks. The whole tour lasts 3 hours with a couple of pit stops and gift shops.

Can I just go to Xoximilco?

No. To experience the party at Xoximilco you need to make a reservation in one of the different tourist agencies. Some offer transportation. Which, after an experience such as this one, is a much-welcomed commodity.
