Chemuyil Beach seems to be in another dimension altogether
It seems crazy that, in a crowded place like the Riviera Maya, you can still find a beautiful, lonely beach, almost entirely disconnected from modern life. Chemuyil is one such place. Making your way to it you’ll feel like you’re crossing over to another dimension—a touristless dimension.
How do I get to Chemuyil?
Before, you could access Chemuyil beach from Tankah bay, which is now private property. Nowadays, the way is not as straightforward, but it is an experience in itself.
You have to set off from Akumal on foot and follow the signage. The path is surrounded by vegetation, which will make you feel like you’re the first human to ever set foot on Chemuyil Beach.
What is there to do at Chemuyil?
Because of the surrounding jungle, Chemuyil feels completely separated from all civilization: it’s a place to rest and relax. The Riviera Maya beaches are known for their fantastic colors—white sand and turquoise waters—and Chemuyil is no exception.
Here, the waters are calm as a pool, so it’s a great place for those interested in snorkeling, whether seasoned veterans or beginners who are only soaking their toes, so to speak.
But, if a relaxing time is all you’re looking for, bring a towel, an umbrella, and a book, and enjoy the silence of a lost beach in the middle of the Riviera Maya.
Other things to do at Chemuyil
The advice, as you have some distance to cover on your walk back, tends to be, leave before sunset, but you also have the option of spending the night in one of Chemuyil’s camping spots. Additionally, there are a couple of places to eat, and you can even book a fishing trip.
There are a couple of cenotes around here as well—notably, Xunaan-Ha. Because of that, here you can experience a phenomenon called halocline: the point where the fresh water from the underground rivers meet the sea’s saltwater. You’ll know you’re there once your vision turns blurry.
