Punta Molas lighthouse: follow the light
Punta Molas is the northernmost point on the island of Cozumel. There’s an antique lighthouse here, as well as some of Cozumel’s most gorgeous beaches. You can get here by a winding, unpaved route. Once in Punta Molas, you can also visit the Caracol Tomb, from which you can see cruise ships and yachts arriving on the island. It is located on land named after Miguel Molas, a Spanish soldier and mapmaker who was also accused of piracy during his exploration of the area in the 1800s.
Don’t miss the lighthouse
Its red and white stripes stand out against the turquoise-blue water and the earth tones around it. This lighthouse, located on Cozumel’s far northern edge, provides a serene setting from which to take in an astounding view of land, sea, and sky. Swimming is perilous due to the jagged shoreline, but there is good beachcombing and the panoramic view from the lighthouse will make you forget about the tough trek to get here (the dirt road is inaccessible by car). The remnants of Castillo Real will be visible along the route.
Punta Molas lighthouse: Be careful
There was a military checkpoint here, but now you are free to roam Punta Molas Lighthouse. Be aware that there is a lot of broken glass. Even if it is abandoned, there is something magical about a lighthouse. The structure’s individuality, as well as the colors, are truly cool to see. Don’t try to climb all the way to the summit because the wooden stairs are broken.
Punta Molas lighthouse: How to get there
Board a boat in Puerto Abrigo, just a short cab ride from downtown and the cruise terminals. You’ll arrive in Punta Molas in just over an hour, with the only traffic you’ll see along the route being the occasional fisherman. After that, go to the ruin or go snorkeling, depending on your preference.
