Holbox: Why visit the Mayan Island?
The beautiful island Holbox has been inhabited by the Mayan people since before the Spanish Conquest. Its name comes from the Mayan language and means black hole. The average temperature in Holbox is 83°F. Most people visit between January to April, when the weather is perfect. You’ll have to be mindful if you want to visit from May to October, as the weather tends to be hotter and rainier than the previous months.
What can you do in Holbox?
Holbox is a fairly peaceful place, but you can still choose to do many activities that will definitely keep you entertained. If you would like to be relaxed during your stay you can simply enjoy a walk along the beach and the town; lounge on a hammock; watch the beautiful sunsets. The town has many things to offer: you’ll see street art, brightly colored buildings, artisan shops, and you can try the famous lobster pizza—a dish that is characteristic of the island.
On the other hand, if you’re up for adventures that will get your heart pumping, you can snorkel with whale sharks (the season begins in May and ends in September), go kitesurfing (the island’s favorite sport) and kayaking. At night, to wind down, you can’t miss going to the beach to watch the bioluminescent water. It is an unmissable experience.
