Punta Herrero Beach: get the fishing lines ready!
Punta Herrero beach is a little fishing community with a welcoming atmosphere. Because it is slightly far from the outside, you may have a true rest. Away from the rush and bustle of the city. The only thing you will have to bother yourself with is enjoying a peaceful and well-deserved rest.
To fish or to guide, that’s the problem
In Punta Herrero beach, nature tourism is a popular choice because of its low environmental effect. And the fact that it is strongly supported by local and state governments. The biggest obstacle that residents are experiencing these days is the transition from fishermen to tourism service providers. This involves not only technical issues (boat navigation and maintenance), but also financial, organizational, and legal issues.
Other activities
The most popular activity in this town’s cooperative tour guides is fishing trips. But you may also kayak, snorkel, bird watch, and go on numerous environmental excursions. If you want to schedule these tours, go to the hut on Punta Herrero’s beach. There you’ll find a couple of persons who understand English and can assist you in booking your tours and activities. However, make sure to reserve them ahead of time.
What to do
Punta Herrero beach is 43 miles north of Mahahual, is reached through a steep dirt and sand road that runs between the jungle and the Caribbean beaches, providing an ideal setting for spotting rare tropical birds. Best way to go is boarding a fishing cooperative boat to head to the reef, where you’ll snorkel on an old shipwreck, a 19th century steamer that’s home to a plethora of marine life. Large schools of snapper, turtles, tarpon, and barracuda can be found among the wreckage.
Some tips
Mosquito protection is recommended, as mosquitoes arrive quickly in the afternoon; there is also a little store where you can get everything you need for a good slumber. Punta Herrero beach is accessible by land, along a 40-kilometer dirt road that’s a little bumpy but well worth it, or by boat from Punta Allen.
The single restaurant in town specializes in seafood and traditional Mexican cuisine, and it will only be open if the day’s fishing was successful. Even though there are no hotels, it is close to the Sian Ka’an Village.
