Xpu-ha: Why you should ditch the popular spots

Xpu-Ha is one of the most popular beaches among the locals. It is only 15 miles south of Playa del Carmen. This is a beach that is far from the trendy hotels and resorts of the zone, which helps to create a laid-back environment. Like other beaches in the Riviera Maya, this is a spot with a beautiful Caribbean landscape: turquoise waters, fine white sand, a calm surf—and a famous cenote nearby.

Why visit Xpu-Ha?

Visiting Xpu-Ha will give you a first-hand experience of local life. Another perk? It is relatively uncrowded—even during high season. You can pack for a picnic and simply sit in the sand with your food and enjoy the sun and the water. If you don’t feel like packing anything or making your own meals, don’t worry: there are bars and beachside restaurants that offer delicious seafood. There are also a couple of little hotels and cabins where you can find everything you need for a day at the beach.

Since Xpu-Ha is practically a secluded place, this is where many people come to relax. You can lounge on a beach chair or take a stroll down the beach. Thanks to its calm, transparent waters, this is an ideal site to bring children: they can swim and wade into the sea without worry. The water also helps if you want to go snorkeling: this is the perfect spot to see the local fauna and reef without obstacles. 

When the day is calm, many people seize the perfect conditions to go fishing, kayaking and swimming. If you would rather stay dry, you can participate in the occasional yoga sessions, football and volleyball matches at the beach.
