Canamayte Cenote & Eco Park: Like a Sunday in a Friend’s Backyard

Though both cenotes at Canamayte Cenote Eco Park are beautiful, Mariposa and Chen Ha are night and day. But Canamayte offers more than just cenotes—it offers a very homely experience. Lying on a hammock with a full belly, you’ll feel like you’re back home, waiting for Sunday to be over.

Where is Canamayte Cenote?

Canamayte is on a dirt road of Highway 109, north of Tulum. It’s close to other popular cenotes, such as Tortuga or Car Wash, making it easy to visit several cenotes in a single day. Moreover, the facilities at Canamayte make it a great place to end a cenote tour, as they have everything you need to spend a very comfortable day there.

The Mariposa Cenote

The wide array of colors at this cenote must have had something to do with them deciding to name it Mariposa (butterfly). This semi-open cenote looks like a crater: a pool of clear water almost buried in the earth. It’s pretty much left to its natural state except for stone steps and a wooden platform (which blends very well with the environment) for easy access. To escape the sun, just swim to the cave at the back. It just gets more beautiful in it.

Chen Ha Cenote

If Mariposa is open and bright, Chen Ha is the other side of the coin: closed and dark. It isn’t the other side of the beauty coin, though, it’s just a different kind of beauty. The water is no less clear here, and the lighting gives it that mystical mood only found in cenotes. Bring your mask and snorkel to take a look under the surface and discover a whole new world you didn’t know existed.

Canamayte cenote: Other Facilities at Canamayte

The rest of the facilities at Canamayte are very well designed and well-kept. There are the obligatory bathrooms and showers, but there’s also a rest area with that traditional tool for relaxation: hammocks. The restaurant is simple and homely, too. Overall, Canamayte has everything you need to feel like you’re spending the weekend in a friend’s backyard—a friend who owns a couple of cenotes.
