Camping (but not really) at Akumal Natura
What is glamping?
Ever heard of glamping? It’s camping but making it as glamorous as possible (“glamour” and “camping”, get it?). You can… er, glamp? all over the world, but doing it in the middle of the jungle in the Riviera Maya is bound to be an unforgettable experience. There is no better place to do it than Akumal. Also referred to as “Place of the Turtles” by locals, holds a significant place in the Yucatan Peninsula as one of its oldest coastal resort areas. With a rich history and a mesmerizing blend of natural beauty and modern comforts, Akumal offers a truly enchanting experience for visitors seeking an unforgettable vacation. Here are some tips on Akumal Natura.
What is Akumal Natura Glamping?
Akumal Natura Glamping has 20 tents. They’re called that because they’re made of cloth, but that’s where their relation to traditional camping trips stops. They look more like a cabin among the trees. Each one has a bathroom and a bed (or two) with mosquito nets—and electricity. That means an electric fan working all night. The bathrooms are outside and natural. In other words, no hot water for the shower (though you can order a bucket) and a palisade to separate you from the rest of the world.
What does it include
Akumal Natura Glamping offers its clients access to private cenote inside the property with fish spa, chill out, yoga classes and retreats, restaurant, bicycles and wifi.
Akumal Natura Rescue offers a commitment to care for the local flora and fauna in its dedicated facilities and with cenotes for swimming and enjoyment.
Tumben Ha cenote
A short distance from the animal facilities you can visit the subway cenote Tumben-Ha (water of life), illuminated, full of stalactites and stalagmites and beautiful as few you will have seen before.
At the end of the day you can take a refreshing dip in the crystal clear, almost medicinal water! It is advisable to bring mosquito repellent or biodegradable suntan lotion, sport shoes like sandals and swimsuit.
What to do
Nature is very important for the philosophy of this place. They’re doing their part in the preservation of bees and they’re always happy to show you around their hives as they explain their overall importance for the environment. But bees are not the only animals protected in Akumal Natura. The animal rescue center is home to several species rescued from unfortunate circumstances and you can interact with a few—like the monkeys.
Other than your tent, Akumal Natura has other rest areas. Lie on a hanging bed or a hammock listening to the sounds of the jungle. There’s a cenote you can swim in, too, and, if you’d like to meditate a little, attend one of the morning yoga classes, included with your tent. Grab a bite in the restaurant; the menu offers dishes for all tastes.
Sounds like a big place, right? No need to walk for miles, though, as they have free-to-use bicycles to move around.
