Insider tips for Yucatan: Non-stop fun
Whether swimming in abandoned cenotes, contemplating the impressive Mayan culture, snorkeling with underwater turtles or enjoying the authentic island life on Isla Holbox – the Yucatán Peninsula combines culture, history, nature and beach like no other region in Mexico. Reason enough to put this breathtaking region in Central America directly on your bucket list!
Good to know
Since the Yucatán Peninsula is located in the tropics, it is hot here all year round! There are no classic seasons as we know them, but a rainy and a dry season. The rainy season lasts from about May to October, the dry season starts in November and lasts until about April.
Unfortunately, the peninsula on the Caribbean coast is highly prone to hurricanes. Tropical hurricanes can occur from about August to October/November, which is why travelling during these months is usually not recommended.
From A to B
If you fly to the Yucatán Peninsula, you will most likely land at the international airport in Cancun. If you like it especially comfortable and flexible, you can easily book a rental car in Mexico. It is best to reserve the car beforehand -this is usually cheaper and also ensures that the desired vehicle is available at the destination. Another way to get from place to place is by bus. This is very easy in Yucatán.
Very practical: The cheapest and easiest way to get from A to B between the nearby cities is with the so-called “Colectivos”. These are shared cabs that pick you up anywhere along the route and drop you off wherever you want. There are colectivo pick-up points, but you can also just flag down the little buses on the side of the road. It’s best to have some change handy!
