Aktun Chen Eco Park
Out of all the many eco parks in the Yucatan Peninsula, Aktun Chen, 10 miles north of Tulum and only 4 south of Akumal, is on the smaller side—and cheaper side, too. As it features many of the same activities—zip lines, cave-exploring, cenote-swimming—, Aktun Chen is a great place to try out the eco park experience.
The Aktun Chen cave
Not to boast, but the Aktun Chen cave is one of the Top 10 Best Underground Walks in the world, according to National Geographic—and for good reason. Its more than 700 yards are filled with all kinds of rock formations—you’ve never seen so many stalactites and stalagmites in one place. Listen to your guide as he or she explains how such a place is formed throughout millions of years and its importance in Mayan religion and lore.
Snorkel in the cenote
If you were drawn by the crystalline water inside the cave, it’s time to get in it. Just have a quick shower first to wash off any chemicals that may damage this delicate ecosystem. Don’t be afraid to explore under the surface, as the water is lit up.
Interact with the jungle
At Aktun Chen, the activities are not limited to the Mayan underworld. There are four zip line circuits up among the treetops, 25-feet-high, and connected by a couple of suspension bridges.
But, if you’d like to get a closer look at the jungle, you’ll also have the chance to walk through it. No doubt, you’ll come across a few animals. You’re bound to see a wide variety of birds, deer, coatis (a kind of raccoon), agoutis (a kind of squirrel), and those charismatic spider monkeys.
Finally, have lunch at Aktun Chen’s restaurant, which features a variety of simple but typical Mexican dishes, such as rice, beans, and tortillas.
Aktun Chen park is open all week, except on Sundays, and the tours kick off at 10:00 am and stop at 3:30 pm.
