Become a part of the Mayan traditions at Pac-Chen Eco Village

This place is different from other eco-parks. Not only will you learn about Mayan culture here but take part in it. The community is opening its doors, you just have to walk inside. Here are some tips on Pac-Chen Eco Village.

Where is the Pac-Chen Eco Village?

The Pac-Chen Eco Park, also called Pac-Chen Eco Village, is only an hour and a half west of Playa del Carmen, close to the border between Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Visiting the Riviera Maya, you’ve probably heard much about the Mayan culture. Here you can get closer to it than ever before.

Trek Through the jungle around the Pac-Chen Eco Village

Following your guide through the jungle as he explains the local flora and fauna, you’ll eventually come across the Jaguar Cenote, which you’ll enter… let’s say, creatively.

Walking into a cenote is one thing. Being lowered slowly down to the cool waters below is a whole other experience altogether. It’s only from above, though, that you’ll see the sun hitting the surface of the water through holes on its dome, making spots appear—suddenly, it’s clear why this is the Jaguar Cenote.

Activities at Pac-Chen’s Mojarra Lagoon

Most activities happen in the Mojarra Lagoon, though. Row around its banks where they meet the jungle. Stay still and pay close attention to the branches of the trees in front of you—you might see a monkey or two. Or even spot a crocodile lurking at the water’s edge. If a canoe is too slow for you, you can cross the lagoon much faster by taking the zipline.

Interact with the Pac-Chen community

By far, the most interesting activity here in Pac-Chen is interacting with the local community and taking part in their traditions. Listen to the local guide while he or she explains the history of the Mayans, then and now. Help to cook a meal. These traditional recipes have been passed down through generations for centuries, or even millennia. Share a meal at the table with the local community and maybe learn some Mayan words.

This experience at a genuine Mayan community will put things into perspective. About our relationship with nature, with our family and with others in general.
