Xcacel Turtle Sanctuary – A Virgin Beach You Want To Visit

The Xcacel Turtle Sanctuary is a hidden gem in the middle of the Riviera Maya’s most popular tourist route. Being such a popular destination, you’d think there were no virgin beaches left in the Riviera Maya, but that’s not the case. Among the hotels, eco-parks, and tourist attractions, there are several protected areas where urban development is restricted to preserve, not only the natural beauty of the place, but its fauna. And there’s little fauna more protected in Mexico than the sea turtle.

Where is Xcacel Turtle Sanctuary?

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Xcacel is where it is. A protected beach sounds miles away, in a secluded area, but Xcacel is between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, on the tourist-filled 307 highway (Xel-Ha Park is only a couple miles down the road!). And yet, Xcacel feels like it’s in a totally different world.

What can you do at Xcacel Turtle Sanctuary?

This beach is just that—a beach. Other than bathrooms, showers, and a rest area with hammocks, there are no other urban commodities like restaurants or hotels. If you’re planning on spending some time sitting on the beach, under the sun, you should bring your shade and food.

This is a great place to snorkel in. Not only is the water crystal clear, but, being a sanctuary, it’s full of different sea creatures. A handy sign at the entrance will tell you what you can expect to find under the surface. You must bring your equipment, though, as there are no rentals of any kind. And, if you’d like to switch the saltwater for freshwater, there’s a beautiful cenote you can visit.

Where are the turtles at Xcacel?

The main purpose of this place is to protect the sea turtle, but it’s not an exhibit. Rather, it provides a safe space for them to lay their eggs, and for the hatchlings to reach the sea afterward, without having to worry about predators—especially humans. During the summer months, there might be a couple of special activities here so visitors can see this unique process, but, mostly, this is a beach to rest.
