More Than a Hotel, Diamante K Hotel Feels Like a Commune

Built with rustic, earthy materials, Diamante K Hotel stands out among the hotels and resorts in Tulum for offering its guests huts and bungalows, rather than your usual, run-of-the-mill rooms. With its relatively small area and walkways that weave around the buildings, this place feels more communal than those in the enormous resorts.

Where is Diamante K?

Diamante K Hotel is in Tulum’s hotel zone on La Costera, the road that borders Tulum’s National Park and eventually leads to the famous Mayan ruins.

Coming from Cancun and Playa del Carmen, take Highway 307 to Tulum and, once there, turn left, towards the sea, on Coba Avenue and turn left at the roundabout to La Costera. Follow it until you find Diamante K’s entrance.

What is Diamante K like?

Despite its fame, Diamante K Hotel is a relatively small hotel; certainly, more so than the enormous all-inclusive resorts you see in Tulum and other places in the Riviera Maya. Geared towards those looking to connect with nature, Diamante K is made up of huts and bungalows with minimal technology—that includes the AC, which is replaced by ceiling fans. The smallest and cheapest bungalows share communal bathrooms and showers.

For the rooms, they used earthy materials like wood, cement and stone, and thatch for the roofs. Windows are not lacking here, and they take full advantage of both the view and sea breeze. Open them up at night and let it cool you off.

Casa Maria Mexican Grill, the restaurant, continues this theme of openness as many of its tables are outside, with a view of the ocean. There’s no shortage of palm trees either, as they provide shade to most hotel areas, including the tables, deck chairs, and beds in the beach area.

The beach at the hotel

The beach at Diamante K is interesting. Unlike other hotels around, most of it is just rocks, lined with deck chairs and beach beds. The view is great, but there’s almost no access to the sea, except for a single, small cove which really lends to the continuing theme of having all of this place for yourself.
