Fundadores Beach: the biggest and most famous in Playa del Carmen

Sure, Playa del Carmen has many interesting places to visit, but first thing’s first: which is its most famous beach?

Where is Fundadores Beach?

Fundadores Park is one of the most important landmarks in Playa del Carmen, and its arch, one of the most well-known sights in the entire Riviera Maya. This is where the main access to Fundadores Beach is. It’s not the only one, however.

Fundadores Beach extends for several blocks and there’s an access point pretty much on every main road in Playa del Carmen, like the famous Fifth Avenue. You can also get here from Cozumel on the Ultramar ferry, as its dock is also at Fundadores Beach.

What’s Fundadores Beach like?

Fundadores has to be the widest beach in the Riviera Maya, which is great. Being so well-known, it’s also one of the most crowded, though, thanks to the great amounts of space, but never uncomfortably so.

The many, many oceanfront businesses, like bars, restaurants, and beach clubs, line the beach and each one offers deck chairs and umbrellas for rent. Ask around, as the prices vary from one to the next, but you’ll find a spot for sure.

Without a doubt, this is a place for those who enjoy a touristy, crowded vibe. Here you’ll find people from all walks of life; locals with long family histories, as well as tourists from all over the world visiting Playa del Carmen for the very first time.

One drawback is the annual sargazo—the algae washed off by the sea. It can turn the normally wonderfully bright blue sea into a muddy brown and ruin the spectacle a little.

Fundadores Beach is surrounded by things to do

As you can imagine, being where it is, there are all kinds of things to do in and around here. Hungry? find a restaurant. Bored? Take a boat tour, rent some sporting goods, or find a bar. There is something for everyone.
